Frank M. Bainbridge has been an attorney in Birmingham for more than 50 years. The son of one of the firm’s founding partners, he has carried forth the legacy of Bainbridge, Mims, Rogers & Smith, and has been instrumental in guiding it to become the sophisticated and diverse law practice that is today. For Mr. Bainbridge, the practice of law is a deliberate and carefully crafted response to the legal needs of clients. He is able to call upon decades of experience and expertise in representing individuals, small businesses, and closely held corporations. His practice includes shareholder and business disputes, partnership dissolutions, estate and trust litigation, condemnation, and a wide variety of probate matters.

In 1970, Mr. Bainbridge was appointed chairman of a joint committee of the Alabama State Bar and the Birmingham Bar Association to investigate the conduct of two sitting circuit court judges and four disbarred attorneys in connection with copies of what purported to be Alabama court divorce decrees being sent to non-residents when no divorce case had ever been filed. The investigation resulted in the indictment, arrest, conviction, and imprisonment of all six by the federal court in Birmingham, Alabama. Some 6,000 non-filed divorce files and decrees were revealed in the investigation. The facts uncovered by the special committee brought to the attention of the postal authorities and the federal court in Birmingham the fraud being perpetrated by the six individuals and ended this scheme. The Alabama State Bar presented the Award of Merit to Mr. Bainbridge for his leadership in this matter.

With a well-earned reputation as a guiding force in the Birmingham law community, Mr. Bainbridge has served as lead counsel in seminal cases decided by the Alabama Supreme Court recognizing the rights of minority shareholders. He represented the appellant in the appeal of the case that reversed the longstanding law in Alabama that the circuit court had no authority to provide by a divorce decree for a college education for the adult children of parties involved in divorce. He is credited with many years of service and leadership to the Birmingham Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, and the Alabama Bar Foundation; and he has repeatedly been recognized in publications such as The Best Lawyers in America®. Mr. Bainbridge graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law, where he was a member of the Alabama Law Review.
